Kiel is a vibrant seaside city with a working harbor, cruise ships, sailboats and ferries docking on the fjord. The sailing culture imparts a special feeling of life on the water during all seasons of the year. The highlight of summer in is Kiel Week (Kieler Woche), one of the largest festivals in Northern Europe and the world’s biggest sailing event. This sailing regatta, the largest in the world, is held for ten days in June.

The Hanseatic City of Lübeck is both beautiful and historical. The houses of the historic district and the St. Mary's Church (Marienkirche), with its gothic arches, are well worth a visit, as is Lübeck's most famous example of architecture, the Holsten Gate (Holstentor). Lübeck is the hometown of the Nobel Prize winners Thomas Mann and Willy Brandt. Travemünde is just a stone's throw away, where you can board a ferry to Sweden, Finland or the Baltic countries.
