Welcome to the practical year

In cooperation with the Institute of Transfusion Medicine, we offer you the opportunity to complete part of your practical year (German: Praktisches Jahr, PJ) – the final year of medical school - in the subjects of clinical chemistry, laboratory medicine and transfusion medicine.

As cross-campus institutes, we offer 1-2 PJ positions per tertial together with the Lübeck Campus. Most of the time is spent in the central laboratory and transfusion medicine in Kiel, a small part of the PJ (approx. 3 weeks) takes place in Lübeck as part of the cross-campus diagnostic center.

You will go through a structured curriculum during the PJ period, systematically being introduced to the entire breadth of the field: clinical chemistry and urine diagnostics, hemostaseology, hematology and flow cytometry, cerebrospinal fluid diagnostics, therapeutic drug monitoring, endocrinology, protein diagnostics, autoantibodies and allergy, infection diagnostics: serology and PCR, blood donor laboratory, blood depot and immunohematology, blood donation, HLA laboratory, stem cell, travel medicine.

During the PJ, you will not only participate in the actual laboratory analysis, but also in advising medical colleagues on rational and economical laboratory diagnostics as well as the interpretation and critical appraisal of the constellations of findings. Direct patient contact exists in transfusion medicine in the area of blood donor testing and the Thrombosis and Haemostasis outpatient clinic as part of the Institute of Clinical Chemistry. Here, consultative assessments are also carried out and, for example, advice is given in emergency situations.

With us, you can expect an exciting working environment through the application of innovative diagnostic methods with a scientific and technical character. Our institute offers you a collegial working atmosphere and close supervision.

Registration for the PJ takes place via the PJ portal.
