Immunology is an important cross-sectional field in modern medicine. The Institute of Immunology forms an important interdisciplinary link between biomedical basic and applied clinical research. The Institute of Immunology is centrally involved in biomedical research and teaching. The working groups perform research in the fields of cellular and molecular immunology in allergy, chronic inflammatory intestinal diseases, autoimmunity as well as in tumor immunology.
The focus is on the functional analysis of human immune cells, especially the characterization of T cells, which direct protective or pathological immune reactions, the pathways of signal transduction in T cells as well as the molecular control of cell death. The institute operates the central cytometry platform "Cyto-Kiel" of the UKSH and the medical faculty of the CAU.
