Experimental Medicine (Institute)

Emphases in Research

The IEM combines several independent research groups with the following topics:

  • Evolutionary Medicine (John Baines)

  • Medical Ethics (Claudia Bozarro)

  • Medical Systems Biology (Christoph Kaleta)

  • Asthma and COPD Research (Susanne Krauss-Etschmann)

  • Maritime Medicine (Andreas Koch)

  • Proteomics and Bioanalytics (Andreas Tholey)

  • Immunoproteasome research (Silke Meiners)

Groups at the IEM are involved in a large number of national and international research consortia with a particular emphasis on the study of host-microbiome-interactions in the context of inflammatory diseases, including the excellence cluster “Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation”, the collaborative research center “Origin and Function of Metaorganisms”, the Leibniz Science Campus EvoLung, the Cluster Roots, KINSIS, Kiel Life Sciences, Kiel Marine Sciences, the Leibniz Center for Infection, the German Center for Lung Research. Moreover, the institute is involved in projects on chronic pain, social vulnerabilities in oncology, sustainable antibiotic therapies, challenges in end-of-life practices and reproductive medicine.

Emphases in Education

The IEM offers lectures, exercises and tutorial in various disciplines including Medical Ethics, Evolutionary Medicine, Molecular Biology, Systems Biology, Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine and Good Scientific Practice in the study programs Medicine, Medical Life Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Computer Sciences. It further organizes public conferences on topics of societal relevance (e.g. online- conference on the corona pandemic, assisted suicide, sustainability and medicine) and training programs for clinical professionals.

Additional Information/Services

The IEM incorporates a microbiome-related sequencing platform (group Baines), a germfree facility (group Baines), counseling service for ethical aspects in biomedical research (group Bozzaro) and a Hyperbaric Oxygenation Facility for therapy (group Koch).
