The Department of Urology at the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein, Lübeck Campus (Director: Prof. Dr. Axel Merseburger) has been named a “Center of Excellence for Penile Implants”. The Institute for Urologic Excellence (USA) thus confirms the special expertise and treatment quality in the implantation of penile prostheses for the treatment of patients with erectile dysfunction. In addition to the Clinic for Urology, only four other centers in Germany bear this seal of quality. “We are very pleased about the recognition of our outstanding team's achievements, which benefit many patients from the entire region,” says Prof. Dr. Daniar Osmonov, Deputy Director of the Department of Urology, who heads the reconstructive genital surgery department.
Penile prostheses are artificial erectile tissue that can be implanted in patients with erectile dysfunction if drug therapies do not work. Implants are also used in penile reconstruction. The clinic's high quality standards, the large number of surgical procedures of this type with a low complication rate and patient satisfaction were the decisive factors for certification. Prof. Osmonov and his team are also intensively involved in clinical research at an international level.
The Clinic for Urology offers comprehensive advice, diagnostics and treatment for patients with erectile dysfunction and penile disorders with its special consultation for men's health (andrology). “Many men over 40 occasionally have erectile dysfunction due to stress or fatigue. Only if the condition lasts longer than six months and occurs repeatedly is it referred to as erectile dysfunction,” says Prof. Osmonov. In over 70 percent of patients, there are organic causes due to diabetes, hormonal disorders or previous operations in the pelvic and genital area. “Patients of all ages should take the problem seriously and seek medical advice,” says Prof. Osmonov.
