UKSH Achieves Highest Score in the Category "Public Hospitals" and Secures Top Position
The University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) ranks among the best-digitalized companies in Germany according to the current corporate study "Digital Champions 2024." This marks the fourth consecutive occasion that UKSH has secured a leading position. In the category of "Public Hospitals," UKSH achieved the highest score, thus securing the top spot. "This renewed recognition underscores our continuous commitment to innovation and excellence in healthcare. It is an acknowledgment of UKSH and the dedicated teams who consistently work to leverage digital technologies for the benefit of patients and to optimize processes within healthcare," says Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Jens Scholz, CEO of UKSH. "Therefore, we will continue to diligently implement and evolve our digitalization strategy."
According to the publishers, the current study conducted by the Institute for Management and Economic Research (IMWF) utilized data from over 12,000 companies nationwide. Commissioned by Focus Money and Deutschland Test, the analysis extensively examined the areas of digitalization, technology, and innovation. Through the evaluation of several hundred million online sources and a comprehensive questionnaire, these aspects were assessed in terms of their digitalization implementations.
UKSH's digitalization strategy encompasses nearly all areas. As the world's first hospital, UKSH, in collaboration with sqior medical, developed an app for digital operating room process control. This digital assistant aids in ensuring optimal coordination of all processes and effectively connects all professional groups from admission to the recovery room. Additionally, UKSH is at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Alongside several highly innovative projects for data-based early detection of medical misdevelopments, UKSH recently initiated an internal innovation drive focusing on AI. "Through formats such as these, we aim to ensure that as healthcare providers offering top-tier medicine and a hub of excellent research and education, we remain at the forefront of healthcare digitalization," says Rudolf Dück, CIO of UKSH and Managing Director of the IT service provider UKSH ITSG GmbH.
In January of this year, UKSH achieved a digital milestone in medicine: UKSH will utilize an extremely powerful cloud solution going forward. With the assistance of the cloud solution from T-Systems and Google Cloud, the quality of care can be enhanced, medical personnel can be relieved, and costs can be reduced. For instance, diagnostic results can be digitized in the cloud, encompassing documentation and archiving of findings from patient samples and imaging procedures, as well as therapy options.
In early 2022, UKSH became the first hospital in Germany to deploy "5G Standalone" – complete 5G mobile technology. Consequently, medical data transmission in UKSH occurs at the speed comparable to the human nervous system's reaction time. This enables remote control of operating room equipment, intelligent CT scanners not only to scan but also to diagnose, and dictation systems to transcribe medical reports in real-time.
Numerous other digital innovations can already be observed throughout UKSH, such as in patient rooms: Via an LCD screen at the bedside, patients have access to TV, internet, and video-on-demand services. Through this interface, they can complete treatment-related questionnaires or a pain diary, view treatment schedules, and participate in anonymous satisfaction surveys. Professionals are supported through automation, AI assistance, and mobile scenarios. A key objective is to relieve staff from routine tasks, thereby freeing up more time for patient care. For instance, bedside terminals assist staff during mobile visits, enabling them to access findings and discuss treatment with patients.
In the hospital pharmacy, the "Unit-Dose System" has been guaranteeing patient-specific automated compilation, packaging, and direct delivery of medications to the wards for over six years. Within the medical device reprocessing unit (AEMP), UKSH relies on fully automated storage in sterilization – a global novelty otherwise only found in Denmark. With the "My UKSH" portal, UKSH established an interface several years ago, facilitating appointment bookings while on the go.
