Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Tobias Keck, Director of the Department of Surgery at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH), Campus Lübeck, has been elected as the third Vice President of the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV). He is set to assume the presidency of the DGAV for the years 2026 and 2027. "It is a particular honor for me to assume this important office," says Prof. Keck. "The DGAV is a strong network that has accompanied me throughout my surgical career. I aim to further develop this network during my presidency—a network for our surgical successors, a network into politics, a network across different levels of care, and a network with our interdisciplinary partners." The election took place during the German Surgery Congress of the professional society in Leipzig. Prof. Keck will begin his position as Vice President on July 1.
Prof. Keck studied medicine in Erlangen and San Diego. After two years of research at Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard Medical School, he completed his habilitation at the University of Freiburg and obtained an extraordinary professorship. In 2008, Prof. Keck completed an executive MBA in Health Care Management at the Technical University of Dresden, followed by the EBSQ qualification in Surgical Oncology in 2010. In 2009, he was appointed Deputy Director of the Department of General and Visceral Surgery in Freiburg.
Since 2012, Prof. Keck has been the Clinic Director at the Lübeck campus and a professor of surgery at the University of Lübeck. From 2014 to 2019, he established and led the Oncological Center of the University Cancer Center Schleswig-Holstein (UCCSH) in Lübeck. Since 2018, he has been on the board of the European Minimal-Invasive Pancreas Study Group (EMIPS). Since 2022, he has also been heading the Health Business Division at the Fraunhofer IMTE in Lübeck and clinically the Lübeck Innovation Hub for Robotic Surgery (LIROS).
His clinical work focuses on minimally invasive and oncological surgery. Prof. Keck was the founding chairman of the surgical working group on Robotics and Innovation and served for over eight years on the board of the surgical working group on Liver, Bile, Pancreas of the DGAV. He is a member of several committees of the German Research Foundation and numerous professional societies. For several years, he has been the secretary of the German Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. Prof. Keck has received several international honorary doctorates and professorships. As a scientist, he focuses on hepato-pancreato-biliary oncology and minimally invasive and robotic surgery.
The German Society for General and Visceral Surgery has over 6,000 members and is dedicated to promoting research, education, training, and quality assurance in the field of general and visceral surgery.
