Vascular Medicine: Clinic established at UKSH, Campus Kiel

The University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) has established the Department of Internal Medicine V with a focus on Angiology at the Campus Kiel. The clinic's primary focus is on providing care for patients with arterial circulatory disorders, inflammatory vascular diseases, venous diseases, and thrombosis. This new clinic is part of the University Vascular Center North, together with the Department of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Surgery and the interventional radiology section of the Department of Radiology and Neuroradiology, Campus Kiel.

The long-standing certified University Vascular Center North has simultaneously undergone reorganization: With the signing of a statute, the participating institutions have initiated even closer collaboration as well as comprehensive organizational and economic integration. The center's goal is to establish a multidisciplinary point of contact, offering patients optimal personalized therapy at the highest university level in vascular medicine.

The director of the newly established Department of Internal Medicine V with a focus on Angiology is Professor Dr. Oliver J. Müller. Professor Müller holds the W3 Professorship in Translational Cardiology and Angiology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Christian-Albrechts-University (CAU) in Kiel. After studying human medicine and completing his doctorate at the University of Heidelberg, Professor Müller initially worked at the Medical Clinic II in Lübeck. This was followed by a research stay at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, supported by a DFG scholarship. In 2003, Professor Müller moved to the University Hospital Heidelberg, where he worked as the head of the coagulation outpatient clinic and angiology department, and as a senior physician in subsequent years. In 2016, Professor Müller led the Cardio-Oncology section in Heidelberg. In 2017, he joined the UKSH, Campus Kiel, where he took over as head of the Angiology department in the Department of Internal Medicine III.

With his extensive clinical experience, Professor Müller aims not only to improve the treatment of vascular diseases in Schleswig-Holstein but also to create new opportunities for medical education and inspire students to pursue internal vascular medicine. His scientific focus lies in targeted anti-inflammatory therapy for vascular diseases. His research benefits from being integrated into the local site of the German Center for Cardiovascular Research and the Excellence Cluster "Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation" (PMI).

With the establishment of the Department of Internal Medicine V, the Department of Internal Medicine III, Campus Kiel, is renamed as the Department of Internal Medicine III with a focus on Cardiology and Internal Intensive Care Medicine.

Since January 1st, the Department of Internal Medicine I with focuses on Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Pulmonology, Internal Intensive Care Medicine, Endocrinology, Infectiology, Rheumatology, Nutritional and Aging Medicine, Campus Kiel, has been led by a directorate consisting of two leaders. Continuing as Clinic Director is Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. Stefan Schreiber. Joining him in this position is Professor Dr. Jan Heyckendorf, who oversees the areas of Pulmonology, Ventilatory Medicine, Internal Intensive Care Medicine, and Infectiology.

Professor Heyckendorf has been a Professor of Pulmonology with a focus on chronic inflammatory lung diseases at the Faculty of Medicine of CAU since 2022 and serves as the head of the Leibniz Lung Clinic, a joint institution of the Borstel Research Center – Leibniz Lung Center (FZB), CAU, and UKSH. He studied and earned his doctorate in human medicine at the University of Lübeck and completed his specialist training in Internal Medicine and Pulmonology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, the Borstel Research Center, and UKSH, Campus Lübeck. Professor Heyckendorf holds additional qualifications in Infectiology and Intensive Care Medicine. Prior to joining UKSH, he served as the Deputy Medical Director of the Medical Clinic at FZB.

With a background in molecular biology, Professor Heyckendorf has a unique perspective on translational research. Precision medicine is the focus of his scientific work. He has contributed to personalizing resistant tuberculosis treatment through his involvement in the German Center for Infection Research and several EU projects. Currently, his focus is on endotype-based therapy for chronic inflammatory lung diseases and reapplying for the PMI Excellence Cluster.
