Point-of-care testing (POCT) refers to the performance of diagnostic tests in close proximity to the site of patient care, e.g., on a hospital ward, instead of in a central laboratory. It is typically performed by medical personnel who are not primarily trained in clinical laboratory diagnostics. Nowadays, numerous laboratory parameters can be determined quickly and reliably directly on the patient. In German, POCT is therefore also referred to as near-patient laboratory diagnostics.
